An experimental production
Damansara Performing Arts Centre dedicates its space to the growth and development of the performing arts scene in Malaysia, by hosting productions and events through a range of distinctive venues that are easily accessible. From the proscenium stage Theatre to the experimental hall comprising of the Black Box and two Studios, an interflowing lobby which doubles as a Theatre Foyer and an Art Exhibition Corridor; the centre provides a creative space that hosts state of the art masterpieces, all in a casualized cosy environment. We sought to express this through the interchangeable aspects of the industrial architecture of the existing site, mixed with a nostalgic composition of Broadway.
Broadway symbolizes much of a nostalgic era where most theatrical productions were at its finest, reflected first on its memorable entrances lit up to captivate its audience. DPAC indulged in this particular setting for its front facade, a roof of glowing lights drawing its visitors through tall grille doors guarding an architectural reinterpretation of Broadway.
In the world of theatre, stage props are essential to setting up a visual lexicon of a cinematographic backdrop for its productions. Quirky furniture pieces scatter across the main lobby, each with its practical function of being comfortable seating areas, yet in its own unique design setting up a visual storyboard across the space. Brilliant light bulbs forming the words of DPAC burn overhead, daring one to envision the dazzling energy of Broadway. Exposed concrete and steel trusses refine the edges of the structural design, subtly blending into the raw architectural design of the site in Empire Damansara.
Within the theatre hall, rows of scarlet red seats are laid like a red carpet down the hall, ensconced with plates of acoustic panels arranged to look like a grid of metal roof shingles keeping exterior noise at bay. A less traditional approach was taken with the experimental black box where the seats were more subtly colored in gradient tones of grey and rusty red. The main focal point would be on the colorful productions set over a canvas of raw concrete flooring.
